It’s time for Labor Day plumbing repairs

Labor Day plumbing repairsLabor Day is approaching, and that means the end of summer is nearly upon us. Now is the time to make any needed Labor Day plumbing repairs. You’ll want to assess your plumbing both indoors and outdoors to make sure there are no problems that need to be fixed before the cold of winter comes to greater Cleveland.

Start by walking around your property. Do you see any wet spots that shouldn’t be there? If you have a sprinkler system, is it working properly? Any signs of leaks? Be sure to check along the sidewalk. Unexplained wetness on or near the walk could signal a leaking sprinkler head or water line. If you need to do any digging or excavation work, you’ll want to get that done before the weather gets bad.

Next check your outdoor faucets for leaks. Also check to see if you have a valve inside the house that will allow you to drain the faucet when you turn it off for the winter. Never leave a dripping faucet unattended. You’re wasting water and putting lots of moisture along your foundation. Repair or replace any outdoor faucets that aren’t working properly.

Check your gutters and downspouts, too. Clogged gutters are one of the most common causes of damp or wet basements. If you have water in the basement, make sure the gutters and downspouts are clear. Many times just cleaning them out will solve the problem. A gutter that overflows puts the water right along the base of your foundation, and over time, that water will find its way into your home. Left alone, you’ll get a real mold problem, and that’s not good.

Once you’ve assessed your plumbing outside, do the same inside the house. Check all your faucets and fixtures to make sure they aren’t leaking. Run your garbage disposal and listen for unusual sounds. Flush all the toilets. Do they flush cleanly or do they continue to run? How about drains? Are any drains running slow?

A simple, quick check of your plumbing system will help you identify any plumbing repairs that need to be made. It seems that once Labor Day passes, Halloween comes quickly with the holidays right behind. That’s no time to be doing plumbing maintenance. Find out what you need and take action to get things fixed now while the weather is still good and the holidays are months away.
