Easy plumbing maintenance tips for your home

Every home is bound to have some plumbing problems sooner or later. It has been that way since pipes first carried water. The key is to find and fix small problems before they grow into major issues.

Here are some things you can do to keep your plumbing in shape all year ’round.
1. Watch for leaks and wet spots. Leaks can quickly get worse over time or be an indication of an impending system failure. Pay attention to dripping faucets, toilet seats that don’t feel solid, wetness around appliances or in cabinets. Each of these needs to be fixed, and the sooner you do it, the better!

2. Know how to turn off your water supply. If you can’t find the main shut-off in your home, ask for help. Label it or hang a tag on it so you’ll know what it is in the future. If you need a wrench to turn it, make sure you keep one nearby just for this purpose. There is nothing worse than looking for a tool or a flashlight when water is gushing from a pipe somewhere!

3. Learn how to make small repairs yourself. With a few tools and and a good “how-to” book, you can handle some of life’s simple repairs on your own, and you should! You should stay on top of the little problems to keep your house dry and clean throughout the year.

4. Keep your pipes from freezing in the winter. One of the best ways to safeguard your home is to insulate exposed pipes in places where there’s less heat, such as crawl spaces or in the garage. You can buy insulation at your local hardware store. In the fall, remove your exterior hoses and shut off the water to the outside spigot.

5. Maintain your water softener system. Make sure your unit is regenerating adequately to keep your water soft. Check the brine tank regularly, and always maintain the proper salt level. It’s a good idea to have a couple extra bags around in case a storm leaves you housebound.

These simple tips will help keep your plumbing trouble-free. But what do you do in an emergency? Well, we think it’s a good idea to have our number handy!
