Water conditioning problems require attention

WaterSoftnersIf you have a water conditioning system in your home, you know how important it is to keep it running smoothly. That’s because a malfunction could result in a serious decline in the quality of your drinking water. This is especially true if you have hard water coming out of a well – like many of our customers in Hudson have.

There are a few common problems that crop up from time to time that homeowners should be aware of. Pay attention to these, and you’ll get years of good service out of your water conditioning system.

1. Salt bridges occur at the base of your brine tank. This is nothing more than a hard crusting over of the salt to such a degree that your system fails during the regeneration process. One sign that you may have a salt bridge is when your salt consumption declines. If it seems like you’re not using salt the way you used to, you should check the bottom of the tank for a salt bridge. Use a broom handle to break up the salt if you encounter a salt bridge. In some cases, it’s a good idea to scoop the encrusted salt out of the tank and replace it with fresh salt.

2. Blockages can also be a problem. Salt and minerals can sometimes accumulate and block the line, thus slowing or stopping the flow of water through to the tank. Blockages are most commonly found in the brine line itself or along the filter screen. You may be able to unblock the line yourself, but in most cases you’re better off calling a professional to clear the line and assess what might have caused the blockage in the first place.

3. The motor. Finally, the motor or a component within the motor can fail. You may have a faulty switch if the system fails to regenerate itself automatically. If you’re able to initiate the regeneration process manually, but find that if fails to turn on by itself, you likely have a problem with a control valve or a switch. If you need to replace the motor, you should consider replacing the entire system, depending on how old it is.
